Amazon or Allegro? Which platform is better and must you choose between them?

Poland's e-commerce market grew by almost 35% last year.

That is hardly surprising: due to the epidemiological situation familiar to everyone, many people shop online more often. We also order more products from abroad. Eastern and Western markets offer completely new products not found in Poland. Entrepreneurs should therefore consider selling through an online platform. But which one? The tried and tested Allegro, the undisputed pioneer of Polish e-commerce for 20 years? Or the global giant Amazon, which enters almost every country at speed and dominates its online market? Perhaps there is no need to choose?

Amazon's advantages seem obvious.

It is entirely new to the Polish market and gives entrepreneurs the chance to reach the whole world with their products. Amazon's FBA model makes things easier by storing sellers' goods in Amazon warehouses. A shop operator can thus buy and sell products without ever seeing them. With a global network of warehouses, Amazon is famous for fast “overnight” deliveries. Its rapid development cannot be ignored: on the one hand it is an advantage, but on the other... there are two sides to every coin. Critics point to the real risk of Amazon monopolising the global e-commerce marketplace. Unfortunately, as often happens, small retailers are pushed aside by larger competitors. They cannot afford such low product prices or commission that can reach 15%.

Allegro, by contrast, is a platform for everyone.

Both a private seller and a wholesaler can find their place there. Having developed in Poland, it is also better suited to the Polish market. Its growth has been more organic, so many regard it as safer. An important Allegro feature is the option to auction products, often used in charity auctions. For some, Allegro's disadvantage is its focus on one country and the difficulty of opening a business to foreign markets. It works very well for entrepreneurs selling in Poland.

Despite their differences, both platforms share features such as loyalty programmes – Amazon Prime and Allegro Smart – and mobile apps that improve convenience.

Experts disagree on how Amazon's entry into Poland will ultimately affect our e-commerce market. We can certainly expect disruption and efforts by Polish marketplaces to retain customers.

So must one choose only one platform? No! You can sell on both at the same time and integrate them. Solutions such as Baselinker let you use both (or more) platforms, reach more customers and increase sales.

One thing is certain: e-commerce sales are a forward-looking solution for every entrepreneur. Once you decide which platform to use, TaxCoach can help with your accounting regardless of your company's size or sales volume.
