degree programmes are closing for lack of applicants. The list includes not only fields with poor
prospects, but also forward-looking courses whose graduates would find jobs.
Fewer students in philology and environmental protection
Career guidance in secondary schools is inadequate, according to experts at universities that had to close certain programmes because there were no applicants. Specialists think candidates are guided more by emotions and fashion than by sober financial calculations, whether a course suits their interests, or whether it offers a good career start. Parents also exert pressure, stereotypically advising medicine, law or psychology.Russian and German philology programmes are closing, as is Russian studies at Jagiellonian University. Geopolitics partly explains the lack of applicants, but how can one explain the closure of computer science and econometrics and environmental quality and safety at the University of Białystok? Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce also found no applicants for environmental protection. In contrast, degrees preparing students for business remain consistently popular.
